Shopping Tips : Generic vs. Brand Name

September 15, 2010

Everybody thinks they do a good job when it comes to shopping. After all nobody deliberately spends more than they have to or do they?

The shelves of almost any grocery store are full of brand name products that are virtually the same as generics, which means paying for the name is wasting money. For example, over the counter drugs like Aspirin, if you read the labels of generics and brand names more often than not they are identical. Brand name can cost 50% more than generic. This is same with prescription drugs, ask your doctor if a generic identical why would you pay for a name?

Many examples can also be found in the baking section of your grocery store such as flour, salt, sugar, and spices. Also cleaning products have a lot of generics a long with brand names, such as bleach, there isn't much difference. Even fresh fruits and vegetables come with a brand name attached, a fruit is a fruit. And here is a classic, Water, you're already paying for something that is nearly free and as close as the nearest sink. Do you really want to pay even more with a name brand? it's water...

Look at the dairy section, Butter and Milk, there aren't too many ways to make these things. How can a name brand be better? Bottom line if name brand makes a difference, great! but if the generics are identical and even if you have money to burn, don't waste that money. Donate it to charity!
